Nassau, The Bahamas

The Bahamas is a tropical vacation getaway renowned for its beaches, sunshine and warm weather. Nearby the Prince George Wharf, the cruise ship dock, there are many downtown tourism attractions, like Nassau Straw Market, the traditional open-air market selling handwoven straw crafts, souvenirs and tourist trinkets. Bay Street is the lively historic main street of the city, lined with a variety of stores.

Harbour Bay Shopping Plaza, has many stores including Cycles Bahamas bike shop and iconic Bahama Hand Prints company that produces beautifully printed bags and casual clothes.

Forts

There are three existing forts in Nassau: Fort Charlotte, Fort Fincastle, and Fort Montagu.

Fort Charlotte: The largest fort in Nassau was built in 1788 and has ramparts, dungeons, a drawbridge and fantastic views of Nassau Harbor.

Fort Fincastle: The fort was constructed out of cut limestone in 1793. It was strategically placed atop Bennet's Hill to protect historic Nassau town and its harbor from pirates. Queen's Staircase, also referred to as 66 steps, provide access between Nassau and the fort.

Fort Montagu: A small fort of four cannon on the eastern shore, has nearby beach and restaurants.

Out Islands

Nassau serves as the gateway to the Out Islands, to explore the fascinating flora, fauna, marine life and culture that the archipelago of the Bahamas has to offer.

The Out Islands, also known as the Family Islands to locals, make up most of the country of The Bahamas. They refer to every island outside of Nassau & Paradise Island and Freeport, Grand Bahama. That includes: The Abacos, Acklins & Crooked Island, Andros, The Berry Islands, Bimini, Cat Island, Eleuthera & Harbour Island, The Exumas, Inagua, Long Island, Mayaguana, Ragged Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador.
